Farmers market opens in Birch Bay

Terry and Sharon Smith, owners of the T-Shirt Shop in Birch Bay, wanted a way to bring local farmers and people together when they opened their new farmers market at 3539 Birch Bay-Lynden Road last month.

“At first we thought, ‘How are we going to get a hold of local farmers, but we haven’t had to; they’re coming to us instead,” Sharon Smith said.

In addition to local produce, flowers, herbs and plants the market features the couple’s imported Mexican terra cotta décor chiminera outdoor fireplaces, Thai pottery, and a wonderful selection of Mexican produce.

A sperate public market features a variety of local food, arts, crafts, produce and soaps. The public market is free for vendors until July 1, when the vending fee will be $10 per day.

Terry’s Farmers Market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The public market is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. They can be reached by calling 366-0404.
