Birch Bay Square on track

By Tara Nelson

Plans for the redevelopment of Birch Bay Square are moving ahead as scheduled.

Monday, construction crews were shooting metal rods into the pavement and pouring cement into what will be an island allowing incoming and exiting traffic at the south exit on Birch Bay-Lynden Road and preparing to install three large decorative signs around the perimeter.

An empty frame at the north end of the complex separated from the rest of the project by a 75-foot roadway, stood as the beginning of Scott’s MarketFresh, a 25,000-square foot upscale market that will feature a meat butchery, sushi bar, deli, demonstrative kitchen, coffee shop and bakery expected to open as early as August.

“We’re going full speed ahead,” said project leasing agent Brian Finnegan of Westcom Properties. “There are a number of new businesses already open. It’s going to be outstanding.”

The 35-acre lot formerly occupied by Peace Arch Factory Outlet mall was purchased by Far North Ventures, of Mount Vernon, in 2005.

Jared Ware, who owns Far North Ventures with his brothers Adam and Levi, and his father, Paul, said the project has received several inquiries from banks, motels, movie theaters and other national businesses such a large coffee retailer.

Although he could not confirm which company would lease a separate building space reserved for a coffee shop near the north end of the 35-acre complex, he did mention that Bob’s Burger and Brew and Windermere Real Estate are expected to be open for business late this summer.

“We would like to get Bob’s open by July, but we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Several new businesses have already opened, as well. Those include: 12th Street Shoes, which opened in March; Best Image Framing, which opened in January; as well as Papillion Home and Garden décor store and Lil’ Beach Angels, a locally-made baby clothing, both of which opened in 2005.
