Help fight domestic violence
Blaine mayor John Liebert is one of several Whatcom County mayors working to help prevent domestic violence this month.
Liebert, along with all other Whatcom County small city mayors, will be collecting donations from local businesses to create a basket of goods to be auctioned at the fifth annual Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County gala.
The event is scheduled for December 1 at the Best Western Lakeway Inn in Bellingham and will include lunch as well as live and silent auctions. Proceeds from the auction will go toward the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County.
Manca
Valum, director of development for the organization,
said at the end of the auction, mayors will race to deliver
their basket of goods to the winning bidders. The mayor
who is able to deliver his basket to the corresponding
winner will win the race to end abuse, she said.
“It’s just a fun way to demonstrate the fact
that it really takes all of us to end domestic violence,” she
said.
Several Blaine businesses such as Nature’s Path Foods, True Value Hardware, Laura’s Treasure Chest, Curves gym for women, Hazard Promotions, Semiahmoo Yacht Club and the Wisdom House, have already donated items but Liebert said there is still time for more donations.
