Walk-a-thon ties with H.O.G. efforts

By Tara Nelson

Blaine will participate in the Walk Across Washington, a campaign to encourage people to walk more, and organized by the Association of Washington Cities, a non-profit, organization that represents Washington cities.

Dan Persse, physical education specialist at Blaine elementary school, helped coordinate the event for the city. The walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15 and will start at the Blaine Skateboard Park, meandering through the city, and making stops at Salishan, Marine and Peace Arch parks before returning to the skate park. In-person registration begins at 9 a.m. Others can register online at www.walkwashington.org.

Persse also said he encourages local businesses to donate small items such as gift certificates and coupons for the grab bags that will be given out during the event.

The walk coincides with the 11:30 a.m. arrival of the Harley Owner Group that brings gifts, clothes, cash and other goods to Blaine for the Blaine Community Giving Tree, a group that provides Christmas gifts to low-income families with children.

Families can obtain an application at the Family Service Center and the Blaine Community Food Bank, or by calling 332-5213.
