Residents can relax on primary day
Whatcom County is gearing up for its first year of a vote-by-mail system but residents of the city of Blaine and Birch Bay community will not be seeing a primary ballot.
Whatcom County auditor Shirley Forslof said her office began mailing out primary ballots August 31 and has received 8,491 ballots in return as of September 12. Although Whatcom County has more than 100,000 registered voters, only 74,105 are eligible to vote in the primary election. This is because if two or less candidates file for an office, their names will not appear on the primary ballot.
Forslof said people outside Bellingham city limits who live west of the Guide Meridian will not receive ballots because there are no races in that area that involve more than two candidates. This includes Blaine and Birch Bay.
citizens, however, can vote in the general election

for that election on October 19.
