Crabbing opens

Crabbing season for Marine Area 7 North, which includes Blaine, Birch Bay and Point Roberts opened Wednesday, August 17 said Birch Bay State Park manager Ted Morris.

Crabbing is allowed from 7 a.m. Wednesday to dusk on Saturday evening every week until the end of September, with the exception of weekend-long crabbing on Labor Day weekend.

Morris said crabbers can take only five crabs this year, instead of six, and that harvesting is limited to male, hard-shell crabs six and 1/4-inch in diameter or larger. Harvesting of softshell crab is illegal and fines imposed for such activity are approximately $82, he said.
