New coffee shop open for business

By Tara Nelson

Blaine residents have another espresso drive thru to choose from. The Pit Stop Coffee Company opened July 24 at 458 Peace Portal Drive just across from Seaside Bakery.

Bellingham and the surrounding areas rank fourth in the United States for having the most coffee shops per capita according to a NDP Foodworld study, said Wanda Smith owner of the shop. Bellingham, for example, has 2.1 coffee shops per 10,000 people. The only other cities that ranked higher were Seattle with 2.5 coffee shops per 10,000 people, San Francisco with 2.2 shops per 10,000 people, and Anchorage, Alaska with 2.8 shops per 10,000 people, she said.

Smith, who has lived in the Blaine area for 16 years, said she would like to share the lot behind her stand with local artists and antique car clubs for events.

“We need to do all we can to draw business to our city,” she said. “I also feel it is important to be an active part of the community.”

Smith said she and her staff will celebrate the beginning of their business with a grand opening from noon-2 p.m., Saturday August 13, with live music on the deck, free popcorn.

The Pit Stop Coffee Company is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily including weekends.
