The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce is taking its sand sculpture contest to another level with a three division sand sculpture competition August 28. Top prize for the day’s competition is $500. Do you feel lucky?

Well, whether you consider yourself a master or amateur, the chamber is giving out cash awards for these and the family division, handing out “Beach Buckets” with great give-aways from area merchants and businesses. This event is open to individuals or teams. Registration for the masters is $50 and $25 for the amateur division.

Sand castle categories include sand castles (naturally), sea creatures, sand structures, and national landmarks (Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, etc). The Student Ambassador Committee (SAC) will be judging and awarding prizes for the national themes category. Prizes include a grand prize “Super Sonic Package” with two Sonics tickets to any Sonics game except Cleveland or L.A. Lakers, with an overnight stay at a hotel near the stadium. Runner up prize is an “Up All Night Package” consisting of two Mount Baker Theatre tickets to any 2004-2005 Broadway Series Show and Starbucks Double Shot drinks and double shot glasses. Other awards for the other categories are:

Masters:
1st Place: $500, 2nd Place: $250, 3rd Place: $150

Amateurs:
1st Place: $300, 2nd Place: $200, 3rd Place: $100

Family Division:
1st, 2nd & 3rd Place “Beach Buckets” with prizes from area businesses (no cash awards)

People can register for the event online at www.birchbaychamber.com or the day of the event from 6 a.m. on at the chamber info booth on the beachfront across from Stephani’s Beach Café, 7878 Birch Bay Drive at 7 a.m. August 28. Judging will start at approximately 11 a.m. In order to be included in the judging for any prize, contestants must first register and be assigned a plot number before starting their sculpture. Rules and regulations for this event are online at the chamber’s web site.

Awards will be given at Stephani’s Beach Café (in the rear patio area) at 3 p.m. Registration forms can also be picked up at locations: throughout Birch Bay and Blaine.

The day’s festivities will also include arts & crafts vendors between Stephani’s Restaurant and the Dry Dock Restaurant on Birch Bay Drive.
