Lookout for seals, legal advice

National Marine Fisheries Service is asking for your help in locating an injured or dead adult harbor seal in the vicinity of Point Roberts, Semiahmoo, or Birch Bay.

An incident occurred July 29 at approximately 8 a.m. A commercial fishing vessel was observed with a seal caught in its net and bleeding from the face and neck area. The seal was pulled aboard in the net and then pushed overboard alive before it could be examined.

If the animal is located and it is still alive, please contact agent John Bowyer, 676-9268. Any person witnessing harassment or killing of a marine mammal is urged to contact the National Marine Fisheries Service Hotline at 800/853-1964. The intentional killing of marine mammals is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and penalties include up to one year in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.
