Mars scheduled for destruction
The F/V Mars that sunk at its moorings in Blaine Harbor two weeks ago will be taken out at Westman Marine next Wednesday or Thursday for demolition, according to harbormaster Pam Taft.
“There’s still no exact determination as to why it sunk,” Taft said, “although obviously the on-board bilge pump was inadequate. But so far no other damage has been found.”
Taft became involved when the owner, Doug Finley of Des Moines, WA, was “unwilling to take control of the vessel when he was notified that the Mars was unseaworthy and therefore in violation of the port’s rules and regulations,” Taft said.
In this case, “unseaworthy” means “sunk.”
In these cases, Taft said, the port proceeds with reclamation once the vessel’s owner has signed over his interest and then applies for reimbursement through a state Department of Natural Resources program. A similar approach was used last year when the city of Blaine removed two derelict fishing vessels from Drayton Harbor.
