Holiday Happenings

Downtown Blaine holiday celebration this weekend

Its officially the holidays. Thanksgiving is over even though our bellies are still full and the holiday decorations are covering front porches and windows, street lamps and truck grills.

This weekend in Blaine, on Saturday, December 6, the annual downtown Blaine holiday celebration, sponsored by the Blaine Chamber of Commerce, kicks off on Peace Portal Drive and H Street. A Christmas Bazaar will be held between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Pizza Factory, where handcrafted gifts and decorations will be on display and for sale. From noon to 2 p.m. there will be photos with Santa. The tree lighting ceremony and Christmas caroling with community choirs will start at 6 p.m. at the parklet along Peace Portal Drive and H Street. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive from the North Pole at 6:15 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

That day also marks the first annual Think-Buy-Be Local Day throughout Whatcom County, sponsored by Sustainable Connections, a network of locally and independently owned businesses establishing and supporting a local living economy. Numerous businesses throughout the county will be participating. And with that shop locally angle, we at The Northern Light have gathered up some gift giving ideas in Blaine.

Make a scrapbook or scarf. The holidays are always a good time to give homemade gifts and two stores in downtown Blaine stand right next to one another and offer up some ideas. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday, Olasons Corkscrew Willow on Peace Portal Drive provides the crafty spirited individual with many opportunities while offering unique gifts. Scrapbooking has definitely been on the rise in recent years, and supplies are in demand and on hand. Youll want to stop in here for paper, ink and other supplies. Next door, at the 50-year-old Goffs department store, youll find yarn supplies in the back to knit or crochet a nice scarf, hat or mittens. Maybe even that sweater youve been thinking about. They also feature Pendleton wool shirts and blankets.

Give the gift of goats. Across the water at 5157 Drayton Harbor Road, Grace Harbor Farms is doing some wonderful things with their goats, including cheese and soap. If youre looking for something handmade, that looks good, smells good or tastes good, stop here. Specially made gouda and feta cheeses are available, as well as sweet smelling soaps and cosmetics.

Flowers and gifts. Head to Blaine Bouquets on Peace Portal Drive should you desire some fresh flowers, and a little more. Its not just flowers here, but also trinkets of all kinds, candles, mugs, planters, balloons, chocolates and more. Need something for mom or Aunt Bessie? We suggest a few fresh cut flowers, sided by some fresh chocolates and something for the vanity.

A good meal or two. If you desire fine dining or just a good meatball, you may want to take your special someone out for a special lunch or dinner, maybe even breakfast. For those seeking an exquisitely great tasting dinner, try the new Truffles by the Sea or La Bonne Maison, both on Peace Portal Drive. Each offers up some excellent main courses and desserts thatll make your mouth water. Should you be seeking a great meatball and other Italian dishes, head to Bella Marina on Peace Portal Drive or to Pizza Factory across the street. For breakfast, get a fresh cup of coffee with some bacon and eggs at the Harbor Cafe at the end of Marine Drive. For a burger, try Nickis on Peace Portal Drive and for a good sandwich, head to Kiras Grill in the international shopping center on H Street.

Ponder some pottery. How about giving your loved one a handmade piece of pottery, maybe a coffee mug, special serving plate, flower planter or holiday bowl? J&S Ceramics on Blaine Road allows patrons to stroll through the pottery and mold a specific pattern into your piece. Numerous molds and patterns are on hand at the store and patrons are welcome to make any kind of pottery they would like.

Interior redesign. Is the show Trading Spaces making you think a little bit? Maybe youve always wanted to redesign your home, or just a room, but you havent had the chance yet. Or maybe you just want a nice little something to place on the mantle to spruce up the room? At Interior Arts on H Street, they are specialists when it comes to design and decorating and are here to help.

Something sparkling. You cant go wrong with jewelry when it comes to most women. So stop on in to Blaine Jewelry, located in the international shopping center on H Street, for some ideas. Bracelets, rings, necklaces and broaches are all available.

On the water. For those loved ones who adore boating and being out on the water, consider stopping and checking out the products at Blaine Marine Services on Marine Drive and West Marine Express on Peace Portal Drive. Whether its the life jacket theyve always needed, a compass or a map, theyve got everything you need. In addition, Blaine Marina has appliances such as a chest freezer, television and a dining room table. Check it out.

Tools, auto and hardware. For the man in your life, the gardener, the mechanic or the kid that likes to build things, head to Pacific Building Center on Bell Road, or Woltens True Value and Napa Auto Parts on Peace Portal Drive. Everything from oil for your truck to saws, wood and lights are available here.

Get started on the infamous New Years resolution. Most folks have done this at least once: My New Years resolution is to get in shape. Well, there are currently two offerings for that in town, Harbourside Fitness and Whatcom Fitness. A third, Curves for Women, is on its way. The local gyms offer cardio equipment of all kinds, and Harbourside holds everything from yoga and pilates classes to day care. The fitness centers are right around the corner, so theres no excuse not to start up.

Antique surprises. The Blaine community has lost two antique stores in the last year, but youll find wondeful items at Antiques and Curios on Third Street at H Street. There is an impressive collection here of Chinese toys, Japanese tea sets and Mediterranean crockery.

International Center. Whether you need to grocery shop, pick up a movie rental, buy some film for the holidays, or get some holidays cards at the dollar store, youll find what you need at the international shopping enter on H Street. And visit Rite Aid to pick up something for everyone in the family.

Editors Note: Next week we look at holiday offerings in Birch Bay.
