I-5: WSDOT finished work, all southbound lanes open

All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 through Bellingham are open to traffic, according to Dustin Terpening, of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation completed their work and reopened the southbound left lane of I-5 to traffic at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, two days before schedule.

The left lane of northbound Interstate 5 through Bellingham, between Meridian Street and Samish Way, is still closed 24 hours a day from 9 p.m. Sunday night, August 24, to noon Friday, August 29.

Crews replaced 43 cracked and broken concrete panels in the southbound left lane this week, increasing the completed total to 127 of 250 panels. All broken and cracked panels have been replaced in the southbound direction of I-5.

Motorists will notice that the new concrete panels create a slightly bumpy ride. This will remain until crews grind the road surface smooth, starting in mid-September, Terpening said.
