You don’t need to go far to get away, and winter offers special sights and special deals.

This is the time of year for a birding trip. The Skagit River system boasts one of the largest winter eagle populations in the lower 48 states. Trumpeter swans are wintering to Whatcom and Skagit counties (www.swansociety.org) and Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, B.C. (604/946-6980). Any of these outings might be combined with an overnight stay and exploration of the surrounding areas.

This is also the time of year when hotels and motels offer special rates with mid-week stays being the most economical. Winter rates are available at Resort Semiahmoo, a great spot for winter rejuvenation, just next door.

Excellent bargains are being offered throughout the Cascade Radio Group (KPUG, Sunday mornings 7 a.m. – 10 a.m.) on hotels such as the Aston Pacific Inn located in White Rock, B.C., the Channel Lodge in La Conner and the Driftwood Inn at Birch Bay. Additionally, many money saving coupons are available for a grand array of eating establishments in Whatcom County, including Blaine/Birch Bay from this source, as well as the Entertainment Book. The Blaine Visitor Center has three general travelers coupons books and a limited number of new coupon books for the Seattle area. Ask for senior rates, if the facts are not evident. Proof of age may be required.

Getting “out and about” in Blaine or one of our surrounding communities or metropolitan areas should be enjoyable and enriching. Lots of opportunities, more than we could ever take advantage of in our lifetimes, are available to us within a short radius. So go ahead explore and enjoy!
