May is National Celiac Awareness Month, and to celebrate, the Bellingham Public Market, Terra Organic and Natural Foods, and the Bellingham Gluten Information Group are hosting a Gluten Free Food Fair. Gluten Sensitivity (also known as gluten intolerance) is a spectrum of disorders, including celiac disease and wheat allergy, in which gluten has an adverse effect on the body. Symptoms include bloating, abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhea, muscular disturbances and bone or joint pain. At the Gluten Free Food Fair, people can find information about celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. There will be many gluten free foods to sample and resources to help people live a healthy life without gluten.
The Bellingham Gluten Information Group will be providing information about the support that is available locally. Bellingham Public Market vendors Terra Organic and Natural Foods, Trapeze Café Bakery Deli, The Electric Beet Juice Co., and Ambo Ethiopian Cuisine will provide samples of the gluten free foods that they offer. Local gluten free food producers will be sampling their products. Massage therapist Janet Kingsley will be available to discuss the benefits of abdominal massage, and Dr. Deborah Callender with Bellingham Natural Family Medicine will be available to discuss options in Naturopathic Medicine. Plus, there will be door prizes and goodie bags (while supplies last).
