    Hello,
I’m trying to find an obituary for my mother who passed in 2001. Her name was Carla Marzicola Kimball and lived on Harvey Road in Blaine. I lost all of my family records in a house fire some years back and would be grateful if I could have a copy of her obituary. I believe the date of her death was today, March 11, 2001.
    Thank you,
    Marcie Kimball

Hello, Sheryl. I’d double check with the city of Blaine or the fire marshal’s office to identify the most updated schedule. We unfortunately don’t have that on hand. Thanks for contacting us.

Is your paper still free? If so is our local mail carrier required to put a copy in our mail box? I have not received my copy for 2 weeks now. I have been getting my awesome free copy for 6 years. I am wondering what happened. Kind Regards,

  14. Hello,
Has the hard copy of your paper stopped being delivered? I haven’t received a copy for two weeks. That is not normal. I always have on delivered on Thursdays. I may have missed an announcement that rural box delivery was being stopped. I like receiving the paper and just wondering if things have changed.

    Thank you for your time.

      Hi,
Can you please give us an idea of the events that you’ve submitted that haven’t been included? Also, how have you been submitting them? Just through our website or have you also sent them by email? Typically, we give precedence to non-commercial events of general interest to our readers on a space-available basis.

  21. In the Dec 13-19 issue the article about the Blaine budget says that “The 1 percent increase (property tax) is projected to generate approximaely $11,385 in revenue for 2019.” Is that really all that is generated by 1% of the entire Blaine WA property tax base? Thank you

    • Hello, Steve. You are correct, the 1 percent increase would generate approximately $11,385 in revenue for the city in 2019. For property owners with a home valued at $300,000, taxes will raise an additional $4.30 per year, according to an estimate from the city.

  30. There is currently a bill being proposed in Washington State what would make it illegal for salons to rent chairs.

“The legislature finds that broad exemptions for businesses structured using booth renters deny individuals eligibility for unemployment insurance and industrial insurance, and give businesses that use booth renters an unfair competitive advantage. Therefore, the legislature intends to encourage a competitive marketplace by removing these broad exemptions for businesses that rely on booth renters.

No holder of a salon/shop license may lease, sublease, or provide space at the licensed location to any person for providing cosmetology or hair design as part of a separate business to be conducted by the person.”

    Here’s a link: https://bit.ly/2Hr7OK0

This will directly effect the livelihood of Blaine citizens and those of Whatcom County. I’d love to see an article about this in the Northern Light with comments from salon owners in town. Thanks!
