School board recognizes Persse, receives donations

The Blaine school board, along with school boards throughout the state, was recognized by Washington Governor Christine Gregoire last Monday as a part of the annual Washington State School Board Recognition Month.

Senior board member Mike Dodd has received the recognition 30 times in his 30 years of service. The recognition is for the hours of volunteer time each board member contributes in serving in his or her position.

Physical education teacher Dan Persse was recognized by the board for having completed his national board certification.

The high school wrestling team was also recognized for having an undefeated dual meet season, the first ever for Blaine high school.

The board also accepted two major cash contributions to the Blaine Family Service Center.

The Semiahmoo Ladies Club donated $1,700 and the Free Church Unitarian congregation in Blaine donated $2,302.

The Family Service Center serves families in need in a variety of ways throughout the district.

The board reviewed plans for the up coming levy and bond election. Ballots are to be mailed out by the Whatcom County auditor’s office February 20.

Curriculum Director Deb Cummings explained how the Mathematics Education Collaborative (MEC) community engagement model has been working to emphasize learning math skills for students in the district but involving parents, community resources, teachers and administrators.
A community math night held on January 14 had attendance of nearly 650 parents, business owners and students, up from only about 20 at the previous meeting.

“We had teachers tell parents during their conferences, and really recruited, and it worked,” Cummings said.

The next bi-annual math night is scheduled for May 20 at 6 p.m. and will feature a presentation by educator Ruth Parker on mathematics and your child’s future.
