| Terrell
Creek Landing breaks ground
By Jack Kintner
Gina
and Marc Weigum have recently broken ground on their 26,700
square foot retail and residential project called Terrell
Creek Landing. It’s being
built just east of the C Shop on Alderson Road.
The
eight retail spaces, eight condominiums and four townhouses
will be housed in two adjacent three-story buildings drawn
by architect Sean Hegstad of JWR Design in Lynden.
Marc,
34, is a native of Bismark, North Dakota. Gina, 36 and
originally from Bellingham, has early childhood memories
of family camping at Birch Bay State Park, and later
spending summers at a small family cabin on Fir Tree Lane
near Jacob’s
Landing.
They
met several years ago in California and were married in
December of 2004 on one of their frequent trips to Birch
Bay. They acquired the .88 acre parcel shortly afterward
and began the project in January of last year, moving permanently
about eight months ago from San Ramon, a bedroom community
east of California’s Bay Area,
to Birch Bay.
“In
fact, my dad, Hector La Freniere, put in the windows in
the Jacob’s Landing development,” said
Weigum, “He
owned L & L Glass.” She said she was excited
to be back in the area, “especially because
toward the end my commute from San Ramon in the East
Bay into San Francisco was over three hours round
trip. I couldn’t
wait to get back here, and once Marc saw it he felt
the same way.”
The
design has urban features that Gina said were appropriate
for what she believes will ultimately become “downtown
Birch Bay.” The retail spaces range in size
from 1,000 to 1,200 square feet and can be combined.
Two of them in the center of the complex will open
onto a courtyard that will feature open space and
a fountain.
The
living units are on the second and third floors and have
good views of Birch Bay and the Canadian Gulf Islands.
All will have high ceilings, granite countertops, hardwood
floors, gas fireplaces, soaking tubs and will share a rooftop
garden deck. The townhouses are just under 2,000 square
feet and have double balconies, while the condominiums
are half that size and all on one floor.
