Cummings
honored
Blaine
elementary school principal Deb Cummings has been named
Distinguished Principal by the Elementary School Principals
Association of Washington. School district superintendent
Gordon Dolman made the announcement at the school boards
regular meeting May 20.
Cummings was one of 18 Washington state principals to be
named by the association. Candidates are selected on their
contributions to professional growth, educational excellence,
community relations and humanitarian activities.
Dolman pointed out that it was highly unusual for any principal
with less than 10 years experience to be nominated. Cummings
has been principal for six years.
In other district business, long-time Blaine teacher John
Freal spoke in support of high school principal Dan Newell
who is on leave following his arrest on drinking and driving
charges May 11. Freal discussed Newells accomplishments
and encouraged the board to allow Newells return to
his duties as early as possible.
Saying she was not responding specifically to Newell, board
chair Jane Woods said that leave is often a mark of compassion
by employers wishing to allow employees time to deal with
issues and to allow emotions to dissipate..
