Blaine wins NCC District baseball
championship
Blaine
defeated Granite Falls on May 8 and May 11 at Mt. Vernons
Sherman Anderson Field by identical scores of 7-1 to sweep
the best-of-three NCC District championship series 2-0 and
win the NCC/District title.
The Borderites are slated for a first-round loser-out regional
playoff at 11 a.m. on May 18 at Bellinghams Joe Martin
Field against the No. 3 seed from the Nisqually Leagues
West Central District 3. The winner plays at 6 p.m. on May
18 in another loser-out contest, the winner of this one
going to State, May 24-25 in Yakima.
Laird
Dickie struck out 10, walked none and scattered four hits
to top the Tigers in the May 8 opener. Grant Sanders went
six innings, let up one hit and one run, struck out six
and walked four to take the May 11 game. Craig Anderson
played closer for Sanders, striking out the G-F side in
the seventh.
Blaine
scored all seven of their runs on May 8 in the second inning.
Dickie walked, and Chris Kleman and Kyle Dhanani singled
to load the bases and set the stage for Blaines offensive
outburst. Bryan Galbraith walked to force home the Bs
first run. Neal Teutschs line drive single to left
brought in Kleman and Dhanani. Anderson walked to reload
the bases. Sanders and Kyle Green followed with a two-run
single each and it was 7-0, Blaine.
G-Falls
scored their only run in the third; a catchers interference
call on a 6-3 fielders choice made it of the unearned
variety.
Blaine
distributed their seven runs on May 11, getting three in
the first, two in the third and two more in the fourth.
Dickie, playing first in this one, went 2-for-2, driving
in four runs on a pair of two-run singles.
The
Borderites reached the District championship series with
G Falls, defeating Meridian 12-6 and Lynden Christian 5-1
on May 6 at Mt. Vernon.
Kleman
pitched 4 2/3rds innings in the opener, improving his record
to 4-0 with the help of Galbraith, who went 2 1/3 innings
in relief. The Kleman-Galbraith combination scattered 10
hits and survived six Borderite errors in getting the win.
Kleman
went 3-for-3 with a RBI and Anderson, 2-for-3 with a home
run and 3 RBIs.
The
5-1 win over LC saw Sanders and Anderson combining to throw
a two-hitter. The Lyncs only run was unearned. The
game was a classic pitching duel until Blaines Ryan
Pikes two-run single broke a 1-1 deadlock in the sixth.
Loser Mark Holleman pitched well, letting up 4 hits and
striking out 7 Borderites..
