Shuckin
on the Spit
The
first Shuckin on the Spit Festival at Resort Semiahmoo attracted
over 600 seafood fans and water quality boosters despite
a chilly rain that dampened paper napkins but not appetites.
While many had to wait up to an hour in the main line to
get to the barbecue, they were rewarded with piles of halibut,
crab, salmon, mussels, clams and oysters. And they had to
make it past the strawberry shortcake first...
The refurbished warehouse that was once home to the Plover
housed educational displays and vendors featuring the finest
in northwest fresh foods. Visitors learned what was at stake
in the waters of Drayton Harbor - a monster oyster harvest
in 2004 if the water quality improves - and had the opportunity
to tour the community oyster farm on the Plover. Five percent
of proceeds from vendors and $2 from every admission to
the event went to the Puget Sound Restoration fund to bolster
recovery efforts in Drayton Harbor..
