Cancer tests

St. Joseph Hospital’s Community Cancer Center is coordinating a free colo-rectal Cancer home-testing kit distribution until March 15. Hemoccult II kits (blood stool tests) and informational brochures will be available at local pharmacies, senior centers and churches. Tests will be returned to the Community Cancer Center for analysis. Results will be mailed to participants and their physicians.

Colo-rectal cancer is the second most common cancer resulting in death in the United States and ranks third highest in diagnosis in Whatcom County. Use of the home testing kit has proven to reduce the mortality rate of colon cancer by 30 percent.

The screening is sponsored by the St. Joseph Hospital Community Cancer Center and St. Luke’s Foundation.
