Lady B's top Baker
Blaine,
exhibiting in your face ferocity on defense
and elegant execution on offense, took sole possession of
second place in the NCC with a 52-21 victory over Mt. Baker
on January 10 in girls basketball at the Big Orange.
The win was the Lady Bs most impressive performance
so far this season and left the faithful beaming over Blaines
awesome big D display.
Coach
Pat Green noted that Shela Robertsons play was
awesome and that Kristina Francis didnt give
up a point while guarding MBs top gun Jennifer Flannery.
Green glowed, Everybody played well.
Blaine
got 13 steals to MBs three and forced 24 MB turnovers
to the Lady Bs 11. MB was held to 7, 1 and 4 points
in the first three Qs. The time that elapsed between
Samantha Phillips dropping a deuce for MB at 4:05 in Q1
and Mt. Bakers next score, a free throw success by
Jennifer Flannery at 4:58 in Q2, was eight minutes and 53
seconds. The elapsed time between Phillips deuce and
MBs next success from the floor, a two-pointer by
Christina Varang at 4:01 in Q3, was 12 minutes and 56 secs.
Thats defense.
Jessica
Summers got 15 points and 10 rebounds for Blaine. Anna Sticklin
added 9 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Robertson, besides
being diva of defense, got 8 points.
The
Lady Bs defeated Granite Falls 57-33 on January 8
at G-Falls. Using a mix of good D and O, Blaine topped GF
in rebounds 28-17, assists 15-3, floor shots 51-35 and shooting
percentage (47 to 31 from the floor and 62 to 55 on free
throws). The Bs committed 18 fouls to GFs 10
and 15 turnovers to GFs 26.
Summers
led the Bs with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Linsey
Taylor, the other Borderite in double figures, got 11.
Blaine
pounced on the Tigers for a 15-8 first Q lead, extended
it to 30-12 at the half and outscored the Lady Ts
15-12 and 12-9 in the final Qs.
The Lady Bs host Lakewood on January 22 at 7 p.m.
The Blaine-South Whidbey game on January 31, originally
slated for February 1, has been moved to January 31.

Blaine
wrestler and second seed Tyler Glahn (18-1) edged Nooksack
Valley grappler and top seed Justin Van Dyke 2-1 to win
the 125-lb. title at the Joe Beam Whatcom County Invitational
on January 12 at Sehome High School. Other Borderites placing
at Joe Beam were Richie Tewes, 3rd at 135 lbs.; Randy Newton,
6th at 145 lbs. and Ivan Matamoros, 8th at 152 lbs.
Barracuda Benefit
The Blaine Barracuda Wrestling Clubs fund-raising
tourney is January 19 at Ken Waters Gym. Officials and volunteers
should be at the gym by 9 a.m. For further info, contact

Donkey Ball Cancelled
The donkey basketball fundraiser slated for January 23 at
Ken Waters Gym has been cancelled.
Borderite boys in second
Blaine defeated Mt. Baker on January 11 and Granite Falls
73-37 January 8 to land alone in second nplace in North
Cascades boys basketball.
