Students get chance to look further afield

Local students can broaden their horizons this summer with help from the Assistance League of Bellingham. The organization’s enrichment scholarship project sent three Blaine students to study music, engineering and nursing last year, and is looking for more candidates this summer.

The scholarships are available to middle and high school students, who apply through their school counselor’s office. The funds allow students to expand their educational opportunities by participating in special summer programs in art, science, math, drama, leadership, journalism and other fields. Sports programs, foreign study, exchange programs and private lessons are not eligible for the scholarships.

Awards are based on merit, potential, talent, motivation and written recommendations from school counselors. Only a portion of the program cost is covered by the scholarships, with students expected to pick up the balance..
