Get
out and run!
Blaines own race will have its inaugural running
next weekend.
The Run to the Border, started by Blaine elementary physical
education teacher Dan Persse, is intended to be both a fundraiser
and a way to get the community moving. Its been
my goal for some time to use a fun run event to help support
and inspire kids to be physically active, he said.
The event features a 1.5 kilometer fun run for kids under
15 and a 5 kilometer race open to anyone. Both courses start
at the Blaine high school track and head for Peace Arch
State park. The longer run winds through Blaines downtown
on the way back to the grandstands. This is a great
flat street run, said Persse, adding that the course
was jogger stroller friendly.
The event will be about more than just running, and includes
a bike rodeo, food and drinks and a post-race raffle. Proceeds
from the event will benefit the newly established Girls
on the Run program in Blaine, which uses running and workouts
to help build self-esteem and teach life skills to girls
in 3rd to 5th grade.
While runners can register on the day of the race, May 4,
only those that pre-register can get a Run to the Border
t-shirt. Pre-registration costs $17 for adults, $12 for
kids from 7 to 12 and $8 for kids under six. Pre-registration
entries need to be postmarked by April 29 and are available
at the school.
If you arent ready to run but must have a shirt, volunteer
to help out with the event. Shirts will also be available
for sale on the day of the race.
