AROUND THE CITY...

The annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held Sunday, May 5, 1 p.m. at the Sawtooth dock in Blaine Harbor.

It is sponsored by the Seafarer’s Memorial Committee and Blaine Chamber of Commerce. The music will be provided by the Blaine high school music department. The Blaine Ministerial Association will conduct the service. Refreshments at the Blaine Harbor office meeting room will be provided by local fishermen’s families.

Blaine City Council has adopted a resolution declaring the city a “Hate-Free Zone” in conjunction with other cities that have joined in efforts to support diversity and banded against hate.

The resolution, in part, reads as follows: “Whereas, hate, in any form, should be abhorrent to us all . . . the City of Blaine adopts a policy of zero tolerance of hate crimes of any kind against anyone. Be it further resolved that the City of Blaine be declared a No Hate Zone and that we all work toward building a tolerant community which celebrates diversity.”
Council adopted the resolution at its April 22 meeting.

Students are notified that they have achieved this distinction when they receive their grades for the quarter.

During the month of May, Brown & Cole stores together with the Whatcom Literacy Council are conducting a fundraiser at all Cost Cutter stores. Shoppers will be able to support adult literacy through the promotion To Read is to Shine. Tear-off donation slips for $2 will be available at the checkout register and added to the shoppers’ grocery bill.

All proceeds go directly to the council to help adults county-wide learn to read or use English as a second language. Over 30,000 adults may need help.

Supporting literacy is giving a gift that lasts a lifetime. For more information about the council, call 360/647-3264 or visit www.whatcomliteracy.org.
