The
annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held Sunday, May 5,
1 p.m. at the Sawtooth dock in Blaine Harbor.
It is sponsored by the Seafarers Memorial Committee
and Blaine Chamber of Commerce. The music will be provided
by the Blaine high school music department. The Blaine Ministerial
Association will conduct the service. Refreshments at the
Blaine Harbor office meeting room will be provided by local
fishermens families.
Blaine City Council has adopted a resolution declaring the
city a Hate-Free Zone in conjunction with other
cities that have joined in efforts to support diversity and
banded against hate.
The resolution, in part, reads as follows: Whereas,
hate, in any form, should be abhorrent to us all . . . the
City of Blaine adopts a policy of zero tolerance of hate crimes
of any kind against anyone. Be it further resolved that the
City of Blaine be declared a No Hate Zone and that we all
work toward building a tolerant community which celebrates
diversity.
Council adopted the resolution at its April 22 meeting.
Students
who attended Blaine high school have been named to the Deans
List at the University of Washington for the Winter Quarter.
To qualify for the Deans List, a student must have
completed at least 12 graded credits and have a grade point
average of at least 3.50 (out of 4). Students are notified
that they have achieved this distinction when they receive
their grades for the quarter.
Students from Blaine are: Al Rizwan, Alvin Chang, Brian
Chang, Humza Maqbool Chaudhry, Stefanie Davidson, Matthew
Hutchins, Coby Lastuka, Guy Smith, Summer Starr, and Eythor
Westman.
During
the month of May, Brown & Cole stores together with
the Whatcom Literacy Council are conducting a fundraiser
at all Cost Cutter stores. Shoppers will be able to support
adult literacy through the promotion To Read is to Shine.
Tear-off donation slips for $2 will be available at the
checkout register and added to the shoppers grocery
bill.
All proceeds go directly to the council to help adults county-wide
learn to read or use English as a second language. Over
30,000 adults may need help.
