Seven staright wins for Clausen crew
By Neil
Macdonald
Coach
Gary Clausens Borderites picked up their fifth, six
and seventh straight NCC baseball victories to complete
a week of wins.
The
Bs edged Granite Falls 6-5 on April 1 at the Pipe,
topped the Tigers 13-5 on April 3 in G-Falls and took an
8-3 triumph from the Cougars in Lakewood on April 5. The
wins kept Blaine locked in first place with Nooksack Valley
in the NCC, each possessors of a 7-0 record.
With
the score knotted 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh and two
Borderites aboard in the April 1 game, a Tiger attempt to
pick off Blaine runner Ryan Pike turned sour for Sultan,
sweet for Blaine. The ball went astray and Pike came home
with the winning run. Craig Anderson, who got the win, went
2-for-3, including a double. Kyle Green was 2-for-4 with
a RBI and Pike was 3-for-4, with a double and a RBI.
Starter
Bob Francis went 3 1/3 innings and struck out five to win
the April 3 game for the Borderites. After Anderson opened
the tilt with a home run for Blaine, Chris Klemen went 3-for-4
with 3 RBIs; Francis, 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a double and
Grant Sanders, 2-for-3 with a double.
Sanders
contributed considerably to Blaines conquering of
Lakewoods Cougars with a pair of home runs and 5 RBIs.
Anderson went 2-for-3, drove in 3 runs and added another
homer to the Borderite bat barrage. Laird Dickie (2-0) went
the distance for the win, scattering four hits and striking
out six..

Farmer
low-medallist twice
Borderite
Kevin Farmer carded a 39 to tie for low medalist as Blaine
tallied a five-man total of 240 to finish second to Meridians
233 in a three-way NCC golf tourney at Kayak Point on April
2. Lakewood trailed with 267. Other Borderite scores were
Doug Goldsby 48, Adam Dolan 48, Kyle Goddard 52, Matt Wiens
53 and Travis Black 56.
Farmer
was low medalist with a 1-over 73 as the Borderites dropped
a 444-457 non-conference decision to Bellinghams Red
Raiders on April 5 at Semiahmoo GCC. Farmers near-par
performance included a pair of birdies and was another enviable
outing for the Borderite ace. Other Blaine scores: Goldsby
85, Dolan 94, C.J. Stauffer 101, Goddard 104 and Black 112..

Neil's
Notes
3-3 Record for Fastpitch
It wasnt the best of weeks for Blaines fastpitch
nine as the Lady Bs went 1-for-3 to go into spring
break with a 3-3 record in the North Cascades Conference.
The
toughest of the two losses was probably the Nooksack Valley
fray on April 5 at NV since it could have gone either way.
The Pioneers, however, put two runs across in their half
of the seventh to edge the Lady Bs 7-6.
Blaines
Alisa Burke went 3-for-4 and hit two doubles and Brandy
Johanneesson hit 2-for-4.
Undefeated
South Whidbey picked up their sixth straight NCC fastpitch
win, defeating Blaine 18-0 on April 3 at the Pipe. Holly
Steckler and Krista Walter got the Lady Bs only hits
in the tilt.
Blaine
strung together five hits, three Sultan errors and 24 walks
for their win of the week, defeating the Turks 19-8 on April
1 at Sultan. Steckler went 2-for-4 and Brandy Johanneson
hit a two-run double to lead the Lady Bs at the plate.
Walter picked up the win.
Trojans edge soccer Borderites
Conference-leading Meridian (9-1) won a 1-0 squeaker over
Blaine (4-5) at the Pipe on April 5. It was the second time
this season the Trojans topped the Borderites 1-0. The last
time was in an Ides of March windstorm at Laurel.
This
time the weather was soccer-friendly. The Trojans, however,
werent. The moment of truth came at the 16-minute
mark of the second half. Meridians Mike Geleynse,
chaperoning the ball downfield, circumvented the attentions
of two Blaine offenders intent on relieving him of the ball,
got into space and promptly put the ball in a corner of
the Borderite net.
The
Bs continued to come at the Ts, but Meridian
keeper Keenan Haak turned an onslaught of goal-bound shots
into saves.
Blaines
Zach Freeman sank the crucial counter in a shootout with
second-place Sultan and GK Eli Dugger made a just as crucial
stop of a Turk attempt to tie things back up as Blaine took
a 1-0 OT win home from Sultan on April 3.
The
win came after Lynden Christian had blanked the Borderites
2-0 on April 1 at the Pipe as Nick Ammons scored a pair
of goals for the Lyncs. Ammons initial goal, an unassisted
effort, came at the eight-minute mark of the first half.
His second, six minutes into the second half, came off an
assist from Chad DeHaan.
Schedule Changes
Two Borderite contests, victims of Marchs ill-mannered
snit of snow, cold and wind have been rescheduled. The March
19 boys soccer game against Mt. Baker has been re-slated
for 3:30 p.m. on April 16 at MB. The March 20 fastpitch
tilt against Lakewood has been set for 4:30 p.m. April 19
in LW.
Tri-meet Track Wins for Borderites
Blaine picked up a pair of firsts in a NCC tri-school track
and field meet at Blaine High School stadium on April 4.
The Borderite boys tallied 80 points to Nooksack Valleys
57 and Meridians 53 to win the boys division, while
