Blaine
tops Lakewood as Simpson scores six TD's
Zeth
Simpson rushed for 229 yards and scored six touchdowns as
Blaine beat Lakewood 50-7 at Borderite Field in North Cascade
Conference football on September 14.
Matt
Timothy, Blaines other rapid running back, got the
Borderites other TD, sweeping stage left for a 54-yard
jaunt early in the second quarter.
Timothy,
unfortunately, re-injured his hip and had to leave the game.
Simpson stepped up and aided by the blocking of fellows
like Kevin Farmer, more than adequately carried the load.
An
aggressive Borderite defense caused or contributed to 10
Cougar fumbles, recovered five and limited Lakewood to one
sustained TD drive during the game. In air affairs, Coug
QB Leon Dietlin hit 4-of-8 for 52 yards, but was informally
introduced to Farmer, David Borden, Andrew Kallas and Rhyan
Lopez, as Blaines D got four sacks.
The
Borderites got their convert kicking down pat as Sweden-sent
senior exchange student Andreas Frohm used his soccer skills
kicking round balls to send 6-of-7 egg-shaped oddities through
the uprights. The attempt Frohm missed was blocked.
Blaine
and Meridian meet September 21 at Trojans Field in Laurel
in a most important NCC contest.
Both
teams have 2-0 records based on lop-sided victories
Blaine over Notre Dame (Vancouver, B.C.) 51-0 and Lakewood
50-7; Meridians over Sultan 52-6 and over South Whidbey
66-6.
The
Trojans have gone 18-0 in the NCC and 27-1 overall since
1999 and were state finalists in 99 and 00.
This makes them the team to beat.
Lynden
Christian, Nooksack Valley and Blaine appear to be candidates
to do just that. Borderite fans are hoping that appearances
wont be deceiving. .

Notes
Amazing
Grace Ties Record
Blaines Grace Coulter, who led from first to last
step, tied a course record as she won the girls 3.1-mile
run in the South Whidbey Cross Country Invitational at Waterman
Field in Langley on September 15. Coulter, whose 34-second
margin of victory was over many 3A and 4A competitors, matched
the record time of 19:07 set by Eastlakes Susannah
Shaw in 2000.
Alden
Walcon, Blaines top boy harrier, traversed the 3.1
miles in a personal best of 17:04 to come 14th. Dan Marchio
was 64th in 18:58 and Dan Balmer, who cut 1:53 off his last
years time, came 68th in 19:45.
Blaine boys were fourth in a NCC cross country meet at Meridian
on September 12 as Walcon won the boys competition,
touring the 2.5-mile course in 13:54, to finish 24 seconds
ahead of the field. Dan Marchio was seventh in 14:51; Beau
Craig, 18th in 15:24; Dan Balmer, 23rd in 15:55. Coulter
finished second for the girls, running the 2.5 miles in
15:36.
Turks Top Blaine
Blaine lost 2-0 to the Turks at Sultan in NCC girls
soccer on September 13 in a game where the Lady Ts, as Lady
B coach Dan Steelquist said, had to be perfect to
beat us.
Sultan
played perfection to a T, Heather Howard sinking a picture-perfect
penalty kick midway through the second half, then one-timing
a precision-made pass from the left corner into the Blaine
net for the Turks second goal 10 minutes later.
Despite
the two goals against, goalkeeper Shela Robertson played
an awesome game, as did the Borderite defense.
The
Blaine-Granite Falls NCC soccer game at the Pipe, slated
for September 11, was cancelled. A make-up match is being
arranged. The Lady
Bs entertain Lakewood at the Pipe at 4:30 p.m. on
September 20.

15-5, 15-6, 15-4 to Nooksack Valley, third in the NCC in
2001 and loaded with four returning starters, on September
11 at the Big Orange.
Becky
Riddle served 100 percent in both games for Blaine and Jess
Freeman was 100 percent serving against Lakewood. Jessica
Summers got 15 kills against the Cougars and Kristina Beljean
added six.
