Pints
and prayers for victims, vigilance at border As
the country reeled from the worst attack on its own
territory at least since Pearl Harbor, perhaps ever,
a blast of heightened security closed airports across
the country, froze borders and closed offices and schools.
At
the Blaine ports of entry, vehicles were turned away
briefly Tuesday morning as agencies were put on the
highest alert level. Customs has raised its threat

approves porn zone to clean up downtown With some
reluctance and one vote against, city council approved
an ordinance that would move the citys lone porn
purveyor out of downtown by creating a special area
for sex-related businesses. |
| Choosing
a government, again The last time Blaine voters
were asked to change the way the city is governed, the
proposal failed. In November 1999, 67percent of Blaine
voters said no to having an elected mayor run the city
and opted to stay with a city manager at the helm. |

| Prayers
for victims, peace September 11 was a day that indelibly
marked lives around the world. A little over 200 people
in Blaine chose to close it by attending a community
prayer service organized by the Peace Arch Christian
Ministerial Association and held at the Senior Center.. |

ballots available from county Absentee ballots are
available in the auditors office from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for registered voters
and Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. |
| Voters
to decide on fire station $ Most anyone who lives
in Blaine has heard some mention of the bond for the
new fire station. Although it has not yet been voted
on, the fire department is ready to make things happen. |

Blaine need a change? On September 18 Blaine voters
go to the polls to decide on the future of Blaines
city manager system of government. This week, The Northern
Light went to them and asked how they would be voting
and why. |

& Con Opinion One:Two years ago, you,
the voters, said you wanted to stay with our present
form of government. You made the right decision!
Opionion Two: We must ask ourselves a very simple
question: Should the top executive in Blaine be a hired
employee or someone who should be accountable to us?
