Football
starts vs. Notre Dame
After
trading tackles, testing techniques and fine tuning the
teams timing at the Ferndale football jamboree on
August 31, Blaines Borderites will host the Notre
Dame High School Jugglers from Vancouver, B.C. in a non-conference
contest on September 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Vancouver is, perhaps, the only place on the planet where
a school named Notre Dame does not have the team name of
Fighting Irish. Vancouver College, another independent
Vancouver school, co-opted the Celtic moniker before NDHS
got going.
If reputation is any indicator, the Jugglers will be a tough
foe.
Those folks who like to make mad guesses, predicting how
things like tech stocks and teams will do, have Blaine as
an outside contender for the third and final North Cascade
Conference spot in the state playoff lottery.
Lynden Christian, Meridian, Nooksack Valley, Sultan and,
perhaps, Mt. Baker are also contenders. Having six NCC teams
considered contenders suggests 2001 will be a season of
close encounters of the fun to watch kind.

Notes

University players to be named to the 2001 Southland Conference
All-Academic baseball team. Newell, a redshirt freshman,
hit .270 with 10 RBIs and a home run in his first season
with the SLU Lions.
