Just one dollar... The
Editor: At the end of President Bushs press conference last night,
he made a special appeal to all American children to contribute $1 each to aid
Afghani children.
Unfortunately,
most newspapers didnt feel the request was newsworthy. For instance, the
USA Today only gave his request one sentence and didnt bother to tell
readers the name of the fund or the address the money should be sent to: American
Aid to Afghani Children, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington,
D.C.
Asleep? Gone
from the room? Whatever the reason, not publicizing this request robs the millions
who were unable to watch or hear his speech. Please, please, please publicize
his message over and over. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to
learn selflessness, awareness of the world we live in and the power that a single
dollar can wield when multiplied by millions of children.
For
my part, I have written Dr. Dolman, Blaine school superintendent, and sent $1
with each of my grandchildren to their school principal with the same request:
use their offices to promote the presidents program. I would love to see
Blaine children make a positive difference in their world. Andy Wojciechowski Blaine
Vote
for... The Editor: The present Blaine city council has
displayed an ability to work together not only in times when they agree, but also
when they dont share the same view. This is something that past councils
have failed to do. The present council members up for election should be reelected
so that Blaine can profit from the results. The David White, Jim Anderson, Dave
Gagnon group are republican politicians and Blaine doesnt need partisan
politics interfering with city government. LeAnna McGuire Blaine
The
Editor: Al Schreiber gets my vote for 2nd District County Council. As a
public safety professional, he can help us make sure that all of our public safety
and emergency response capabilities are everything they should be. The recent
deliberate cutting of the fiber optic lines that could have impacted our 911 service
is a wake up call that more needs to be done in the area of our own homeland
security. Of all the candidate in all the races, Al Schreiber has the expertise
to lead that effort.
The
sheriffs and firefighters organizations have endorsed Al Schreiber.
You should too. Dena Neevel Lynden The
Editor: For some time now Ive been greatly concerned about the growing
need to improve our criminal justice programs.
But
the voters strongly rejected a proposed tax increase to fund some criminal justice
programs and council members have raised questions about the Medic One emergency
medical program.
We
seem to be stuck with a growing problem and no acceptable solution.
Al
Schreibers 25-year career in law enforcement brings expertise that our county
definitely can benefit from in these times of uncertainty. His professional background
in public safety and criminal justice coupled with his strong stand as a fiscal
conservative will enable Al Schreiber to help us separate fact from self-serving
promotion.
With
Al Schreiber on the county council, the disturbing gulf between a skeptical council
and a reluctant electorate on the one hand, and the brave people in uniform upon
whom we rely for public safety on the other, can finally be bridged.
With
Als help we can determine what criminal justice programs should be funded,
and by how much, and we can make sure the right decisions are made about the future
of Medic One. Surely that is one reason why the Deputy Sheriffs Guild and
the Bellingham Firefighters local endorsed him. Al Schreiber has my endorsement,
too. Shirley Hardy Everson The
Editor: A vote for Sharon Roy, Seth Fleetwood, and Laurie Caskey-Schreiber,
for county council is a vote for Smart Growth in Whatcom County.
There is going to be
increased residential and industrial development in this county.
Lets
make sure it occurs in the right places and serves our local population. Join
me in making sure that in the process of growing we do not sacrifice our agricultural
lands, our commercial and recreational fisheries, and our inherent right to a
healthy environment and all that it provides.
Vote
on November 6 for Smart Growth. Vote for Sharon Roy, Seth Fleetwood,
and Laurie Caskey-Schreiber for Whatcom County Council. Geoff Menzies Ferndale
