Blaine
faces Mt. Baker in crucial NCC contest
Blaine defeated
South Whidbey 41-13 in North Cascades Conference football at Borderite Field on
October 5.
The
win gave the Borderites a 2-2 NCC record, fifth place, and a chance to take up
joint occupancy of fourth with Mt. Baker (3-1) on October 12 when the Bs
and MBs meet at Deming. If Baker wins, its probably sayonara
to state for Blaine.
Third
place in the NCC and its all-important final playoff spot will also be affected
by who wins the Nooksack-Meridian match at NV on October 12. With Meridian (4-0)
favored over Nooksack (4-1), a real scramble could develop. Time and TDs
will tell.
The
Blaine-SW game showed once again how important having running backs Matt Timothy
and Zeth Simpson hale, healthy and together in the Double B backfield. As a pair,
the duo each produce more havoc than either would operating alone.
Timothy
went over from six yards on Blaines first scoring safari. SW snapped back,
Andy Wills returning the ensuing kick 75 yards for a TD. But Blaine evidently
had enough of this nonsense, Zeth Simpson, a few plays later, surging through
a four-lane highway of a hole in the SW line and going 35 yards for a TD. Q1 ended
14-6, Blaine.
The
Bs got 14 points in Q2, Andrew Kallus scoring on a three-yard plunge and
Timothy on a 10-yard jaunt, to lead 28-6 at the half. Simpson scored two more
Blaine TDs and Wills scored his and SWs second TD in the second half.
The
Bs accumulated 400 yards overall, 300 rushing and 100 passing. Rhyan Lopez
caught one for 40 and Cory Crews, another for 32 yards. Blaines Andreas
Frohm was 5-for-6 on PATs..
