at the inaugural running of Blaine high schools new
cross-country course at Birch Bay Golf Club. Krishnek set
the new 3.1 mile course record for girls with
a time of 19:24, as Mt. Baker compiled 16 points by virtue
of finishing 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. Jackie Lewis of Nooksack
prevented a clean sweep by finishing 5th. Grace Coulter,
Blaines top girl runner and a contender for the state
individual title, was sidelined by illness.
Vangie
Gorsuch was Blaines top girl performer, finishing
20th in a time of 24:58. The rest of the team standings
had Nooksack second with 58 points and Meridian third with
62 points. Neither LC nor Blaine fielded enough girls to
register a team score.

led the Baker boys to a first place finish by winning the
boys race in a time of 16:56. Blaines Alden
Walcon finished a strong second with a time of 17:15. Other

Misdirections
puts NV over Blaine
Nooksack
defeated Blaine 28-0 in North Cascades Conference football
on September 28 at Borderite Field.
The
win tied the Pioneers with Meridian as NCC league-leaders,
each undefeated in four games. Blaine slipped to sixth,
with a 1-2 record. Dont panic! Lakewood, beaten 50-7
by the Borderites, are in fifth spot with a 2-1 mark. Blaine
play South Whidbey (0-4) at 7:30 p.m. on October 5 at Borderite
Field and should make up a little ground in the standings.
The
Pioneers capitalized on interceptions and a couple of misdirection
plays to topple the Double Bs.
Ty
Willemsen intercepted a Ryan Pike pass on the NV 36 to set
up the Pioneers first safari into the Borderites end
zone. It came seven plays and 3:34 into Q1 as Andrew Larson
accompanied the ball across on a four-yard plunge.
Trent
Willemsen emulated Ty with an interception on the NV 42
early in Q2. Ty Willemsen, the last recipient of a double
handoff misdirection maneuver went for 61 yards and a TD
at 3:28 of the second quarter.
Nooksack repeated the play late in Q2, Anthony Aure breaking
away for a 55-yard jaunt and the Pioneers third TD.
Ty
Willemsen scored NVs final TD, going over left guard
from a yard away at 7:47 of the final quarter. Nick Harvey
was successful on all four NV PATs.
Nooksack
rushed for 262 yards in 46 tries. Borderite Zeth Simpson
picked up 100 yards in 17 carries, gaining four more yards
than Blaines team total of 96 in 24 carries. Coming
off a hip injury Blaines other running back, Matt
Timothy, was not in top form. Displaying considerable grit,
Timothy rushed for three yards in four attempts.

team made much progress in the air. Nooksacks Darrin
VanWeerhuizen went 2-for-7, picking up 49 yards. Pike was
