Student
chess players of all abilities are invited to get in on
the action in the Northwest Washington Scholastic Chess
kickoff tournament, a warmup for a packed tournament season.
The action chess tournament is in the Ferndale High School
cafeteria on Monday, October 15, registration from 6 to
6:15 p.m.
Action Chess refers to tournament chess games
where each player is given 30 minutes for all their moves,
thus ensuring each game lasts less than one hour and enabling
a full three-round tournament to be completed in an evening.
The term Octagonals means players will be placed
into sections of eight players based on ability, as determined
by their Washington Scholastic Rating System rating, and
if unrated, then by age.
Intended for students from 4th through 12th grades, younger
players may play if they know how to record their moves.
Players who complete the evening event will gain a state
level rating.
This year for the first time there will be a $3 entry fee
per player to cover administrative costs, scoresheets and
awards. Medals will be awarded for first in each division.
