Obitutaries

JOHNSON. Vicki Kathleen Johnson passed away on October 28, 2001 at the City of Hope in CA, where she was receiving treatment for inflammatory breast cancer. Vicki was born in Bellingham, WA on December 6, 1959. She lived in Blaine until the age of 10 and then lived in Olympia, Seattle and Montana, returning to Blaine in 1980. Vicki is survived by her daughters, Linsay and Lacey Taylor, sister Michelle Johnson, brother Brian Johnson and wife Rita; brother David Hull; and parents Peggy and Edward Hull and Donald Johnson; close friend Tim Freeman; and many other relatives and friends. Vicki attended Whatcom Community College for two years and worked for the past two years at Peace Bridge Brokerage. Vicki’s daughters were her life and she was a strong supporter of their school and sports activities. Vicki fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization in support of breast cancer research. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Dennis Wildermuth was held on November 2. Arrangements and services are under the direction of The Jerns McKinney Funeral Chapel.

McMILLAN. Bess Marie McMillan, age 99 of Blaine, passed away October 29, 2001 at Stafholt Good Samaritan, Bess was born August 23, 1902 in Yale, Iowa to Rose and William Chapel. Bess graduated from high school in North Des Moines University. She taught school for three years in her home state and two years in Cut Bank, Montana before coming to Bellingham. She graduated from Bellingham Normal School and taught in Bellingham for five years before marrying Archie McMillan in 1935 when they moved to Point Roberts where Archie’s business was located. Bess taught grades one through six for seven years in Point Roberts. The Blaine school superintendent, Vernon MacDonald, persuaded Bess to take on the innovative project of forming a kindergarten in Blaine, which was a
progressive priority for local families. The Blaine kindergarten, pioneered
by Bess McMillan, opened in the 1948-1949 school year. Bess took the little
children in hand for 12 years, retiring in 1962. For many years in the summer months, Archie and Bess cruised the waters of coastal Washington and the Canadian Gulf Islands in their wooden boat, Flying Cloud. Bess lost Archie in 1972. Bess McMillan’s involvement in life never diminished and she enriched the Blaine community. Bess was a member of the PEO, Chapter J, Lambda Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma (retired teachers); Peace Arch International Garden Club; Friends of the Blaine Library; and has always been a loyal supporter of Blaine Borderite sports, music, the theater, as well as the beautiful rose garden at her home. Bess is survived by two great nieces and three great nephews.
At her request, no public service will be held. Her final resting place will
be beside her husband, Archie, in the mausoleum at Greenacres Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Blaine Borderites, the Blaine Booster Club or the Blaine public library. The arrangements are under the direction of the Jerns McKinney Funeral Chapel of Blaine.

SMITH. A memorial service for Guy Smith will be held at the Seventh Day
Adventist Church in Ferndale, 2488 Mt. View Road on Saturday, November 10 at 2:30. Guy enjoyed many years in Birch Bay and later he and his wife Phyllis traveled back and forth between Hemet, CA and Washington State. His last days were spent in the house in Birch Bay that he helped to make into a home. He left this world on October 30, his wedding anniversary, surrounded by his wife, Phyllis, his daughter Jeralyn, and his sons, Jim and Chris. Jim’s wife Wilma and a Hospice nurse were also in loving attendance.
A reception will follow immediately after the memorial service. The family
would like to thank all of the wonderful people at Hospice, their love and
support brought solace to all. The family would also like to thank Jerns
McKinney Funeral Chapel for their assistance and care. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Whatcom County.
