Birch
Bay plan driven by growth, consensus In 2020 Birch
Bay could be one of the largest cities in Whatcom
County. The question is, what will it look like?
Volunteers
dig in to bring back oysters, clean waters Whats
going on down there? asked a motorist on Peace
Portal Drive, slowing down to watch a dozen people
in hip-waders stomping around in the mud in the northeast
corner of Drayton Harbor. They were staking out oyster
beds, he was told, an activity the harbor hasnt
seen for over half a decade..
District
approves higher rates The Birch Bay Water and
Sewer (BBWS) District has raised rates on its service
by 3.5 percent. Commissioners voted 3-0 to hike the
rate at their meeting May 24.

approves new rules for manufactured homes
Blaine City Council, pressed for time with a moratorium
on manufactured homes about to run out, unanimously
approved an ordinance limiting their location
to a 300-acre area in the eastern part of the
city. |

theater program rides again Summer Theater
Program director Erin Walcon is looking for a
few budding Brandos, Oliviers and Hepburns to
stage a couple of plays this summer. |

2001: Recognizing excellence Blaine High School
held its annual Recognition Night on May 22, 2001.

THE CITY
The citys community and economic development
department has secured a $10,000 grant from
the state Coastal Zone Management program for
improvements...The city of Blaine has turned
down a request by the Association of Washington
Cities (AWC) to contribute to lobbying efforts
against aluminum companies (Direct Service
Industry, DSI) efforts...Blaine city council
will hold a series of neighborhood meetings
this summer to find out what Blaine citizens have
on their minds. |

THE WATERFRONT Things are pretty quiet
for the commercial fishing fleet out of Blaine
Harbor. There is an opening for crab fishing in
Skagit Bay which is not scheduled yet but is supposed
to happen soon, and the small draggers are fishing
for sole on a day basis, bringing their catch
in to Sea K Fish. |
