Summer
Theater Program director Erin Walcon is looking for a few
budding Brandos, Oliviers and Hepburns to stage a couple
of plays this summer.
Walcon,
20, a Blaine high school grad and a current Western Washington
University English major with an acting minor is heading
up the theater group for kids from kindergarten to twelfth
grade for the second year in a row. Summer theater presents
an opportunity for kids to learn costuming, acting and stage
production.
The
good thing about this program is its fun. You get
up on stage with people who are really enjoying themselves
and having fun. If I was a kid Id definitely have
done it, Walcon said.
She
said one of the best parts of the program is its inclusiveness.
We cast everybody. We think every kid can knock peoples
socks off. Some of the kids youd least expect turn
out to be the best once theyre given the chance.
Walcon
said the program will be split up into two groups
with five weeks of rehearsals for the younger (K-5) group
and a six-week program for the older kids. The sixth through
twelfth graders will produce C.S. Lewis The Lion,
the Witch and the Wardrobe, while the younger group will
put on a version of the childrens story, Mr. Peppers
Penguins, written by Florence and Richard Atwater.
Rehearsals
start on June 18. Walcon said the program is only taking
20 students in each age group so those who are interested
should get in touch with Leaf Schumann at the Blaine school
family service center at 332-7179 right away. .
