Our family recently suffered the loss of our home in
a fire at Semiahmoo. We would like to thank the many members
of the community and the fire department who came to our aid
during this difficult period.
Even
though we are new to the community, we received an incredible
outpouring of help from many people who we have known only
briefly. The day following the fire over 30 neighbors and
friends showed up. They brought food and coffee and worked
hard all day removing the remnants and debris from the house.
We
also had a great deal of help from the staff and management
at the Inn at Semiahmoo who kindly assisted us in our immediate
relocation needs. On behalf of Carol and our dogs, Fly and
Sugar, a big thanks.

I wanted to tell your paper about a decision that Northwest
Podiatric Laboratory has made as a collective group of individuals.
Due
to the rising costs of power, especially in the Blaine area,
we have decided to do our part to conserve energy at the
workplace. We have over 60 employees and every one is doing
their part to cut back on the daily usage of power and water
at work. We have less lights turned on during production
time and items like space heaters and extra freezers have
been eliminated.
I
have taken part in this in my own private life and am very
proud that the company I work for has now made the same
choice. If one company making a step could get others to
join in, we can make a better place for all of us!
We do care!

I read an article in the May 14 Bellingham Herald and
it made my blood boil (Blaine offers idea for sewage). What
Blaine is offering Birch Bay is to have Birch Bay bail Blaine
out of its sewage problems. Why? Blaine has the most incompetent,
narrow minded group of old fogies that cant walk and
chew gum at the same time running the town.
Why
should the residents of Birch Bay have to pay more for our
sewage because of Blaines constant screw ups? We are
already paying too much.
If
Blaine is bailed out by us, then they would want a say so
in how we run our operation. Why? It is a no-win for Birch
Bay. Blaine has had sewer problems for years, and has never
been smart enough to fix it. I bet no one in Blaine government
would ever tell you how much money has been flushed down
their sewer system trying to fix it over the years.
Not
one, from the mayor on down, has driven down the main street
and seen all the vacant businesses, because they all have
tunnel vision. Then to add insult to injury the police force
hides in waiting to ticket all the women for going a mile
or two over the limit, keeping more people from going to
Blaine to shop. They would rather go to Ferndale than be
harassed by the Blaine police.
Do
all the people in responsible positions have a death wish
for the town? It seems the only business that is thriving
is the dirty book store. At least they have the balls to
fight all the right-wingers in power. Im in awe at
how they screw everything up and the residents just sit
back and take it. Now they want a foot hold in Birch Bay!
I say no.
Maybe
in a decade or more when Blaine has a younger, more progressive
government, then we can do a joint venture between the two
communities, but not now.
