Stafholt Good Samaritan Center will be offering its nursing assistant training program beginning March 27. The class prepares students to take the state certification exam and enter the rewarding profession of nursing assistant. Stafholt is a great place to live and a great place to work and graduates of this program have the chance to obtain employment here. Students take approximately 60 hours of classroom training and another 60 hours of supervised clinical training in the facility. No medical or educational background is required.

Whatcom Community College announces general registration for its Spring 2001 schedule of credit classes to be held in Blaine. The academic quarter begins April 2 and continues through June 15.
The county outreach classes, offered evenings at Blaine high school, include English as a Second Language (ESL), Composition II, Business Law and Spanish I. All courses provide credit upon completion.

Alan Lichter, Professor Emeritus and Orcas Island resident, will conduct a workshop for writers on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 & 22, at Resort Semiahmoo. The workshop will take place in a private home and will involve hands-on work with participants’ writing, which may be poetry or prose forms. The workshop will accommodate writers at all levels,published or unpublished.
Professor Lichter is a poet and literary critic whose work has appeared in American and foreign publications. He taught poetry, fiction writing and children’s literature at the University of Kansas and has given readings and conducted guest seminars in American, European and Scandinavian universities. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, where he studied with poet Theodore Roethke.

Washington State University Cooperative Extension offers two publications on earthquake preparedness which can be downloaded free from the Internet. “Earthquake Preparation” and “Earthquake -Emergency Preparation,” offer tips on anchoring houses to foundations, helping find utility shut-offs or breakers, securing wood stoves and large furniture that might topple and preparing a “survival” box of essential supplies. Information on what to do during a quake, tips on assessing damage afterwards and further reading are included in both.
