NEXUS gets the green light

Top federal officials from the U.S. and Canada signed an agreement Tuesday to fast-track expansion of NEXUS and other programs to speed the flow of traffic while boosting the level of North American security.

The Smart Border Declaration, signed by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Defense Tom Ridge and Canadian minister of foreign affairs John Manley, provides for the NEXUS pilot project in Port Huron, Michigan, to resume “with appropriate security measures” and expand the program to other land borders as the single alternative inspection program at the northern border once the pilot evaluation is complete.

Among the 30 other steps in the declaration’s action plan are an identification card with biometric identifiers for permanent residents of both countries and development of perimeter security programs, including visa policy coordination, integrated enforcement and inspection teams overseas to identify potential threats before they head for North America.
