Don't worry, be happy

Bess McMillan, who celebrated her 99th birthday Friday, attributes her long life to enjoying each day and not worrying about tomorrow.

Known for being Blaine high school’s number one basketball fan, McMillan also spent 32 years teaching kindergarten and preschool.

McMillan obtained her teaching certification and went on to spend two years in Montana before realizing her dream of coming to Washington. “Going to Washington always had special meaning for me,” McMillan said, “I always wanted to get out of Iowa.”

Her decision to come west was influenced by her impression of Washington teachers that she met at teaching conventions.
