Blaine
tops the Turks
Blaines Krista Walter fanned eight, walked one and
let up four hits as the Lady Bs defeated Sultan 7-1
at the Pipe on March 30 in North Cascades Conference fastpitch
play.
That
lone base-on-balls cost Walter a shutout. After blanking
the Lady Turks for five frames, Krista walked Sultans
leadoff batter in the sixth, who moved to third on a couple
of groundouts and scored on Amanda Dales line drive
single to right.
Walters
lapse of control was very small compared to losing pitcher
Heather Schlewlitzs walking three of the first four
Blaine batters to face her. Kristina Francis promptly put
the Lady Bs up 1-0 on a 4-3 fielder choice. Blaine
scored two more in the second. Amanda Stull singled to left,
moved to second when Maggie Spencer reached on an error,
and scored when Walter duplicated Stulls single to
left with one of her own. Walter would score on a Brandy
Johannsson nubber that gripped grass and dust, turning itself
into an RBI single on its unimpeded trip between second
and first into right field.
The
Lady Bs got their fourth run in the third inning when
Lacy Cheatwood looped a single into right center and scored
on a Spencer shot up the middle.
Walks
got Sultan into more Double B trouble in the Blaine sixth.
After issuing Walter and Alisa Burk free access to the bases,
the Turks tosser let up a run-producing single to
Francis, an RBI sacrifice fly to Johannsson and a run-scoring
single to Kristina Beljean.
The
win was heartening for Blaine after the Lady Bs opened
the week with a tough 4-2 loss to the Lady Cougars at Lakewood
on March 26.
The
Lady Bs matched Lakewood in hits, each getting eight.
Both teams erred twice. Problem was the Cougars scored twice
as many runs as the Borderites. The bottom of the fourth
saw the Lady Cs crowd the bases with a puma, a mountain
lion and a panther (all Cougars) with no one out. Walter
got the next two Cougs out and it looked like Blaine
might get out of it. But the next batter drove in two runs
to put Lakewood ahead. It was a lead the Lady Cs never
relinquished.
Johannesson went 2-for-3, including a double and Walter
batted 2-for-4 for the Lady Bs.
The
Blaine Invitational, postponed due to rain, is rescheduled
for April 7 at 10 a.m.
In
regular NCC play, Blaine host Mt. Baker at 4:30 p.m. at
the Pipe on April 5 and travel to Nooksack Valley for an
away tilt on April 10.

Unearned
run stops Snow as Blaine falls to Ferndale
Blaine dropped a 4-1 non-league baseball game to Ferndale
in the Golden Eagles nest on March 28.
The
Borderites stayed with the 3A Golden Eagles until the fifth
when Ferndale pushed three runs across the plate on two
hits and two Borderite miscues. Josh MacDonald went 2-for-3
and drove in Blaines lone run.
Losing
chucker Jordan Snow pitched well, going four and two-thirds
innings in a losing cause, letting up three Ferndale hits.
It was cold comfort for Snow that all four Ferndale runs
were unearned and Blaines solo score was earned.
The
Borderites face Lakewood April 6 in a road rendezvous and
April 9 in a home game at 4:30 p.m. Blaine then plays South
Whidbey April 10 at the Pipe and April 12 at Langley.

Blaine
boys excel in field events to edge S. Whidbey for quad win
Blaine
boys relied a bit more on brawn than speed to edge out defending
NCC champion South Whidbey in a North Cascades Conference
quad track meet at Langley on March 29.
The
Borderites win was primarily a matter of staying close
in the running part of the competition, where SW edged Blaine
63-60, while dominating the field events, where Blaine topped
SW 29-24. The Double Bs were particularly impressive
in the shot and javelin, taking first, second and third
place in both.
The
Border boys tallied 89 points overall to South Whidbeys
87, Nooksack Valleys 66.5 and Granite Falls
19. Blaine got five firsts Matt Timothy (100m, 11.7),
Nick McGee (shot, 43-3/4), Zeb Waters (discus, 123-1), Andrew
Martin (javelin, 140-5) and the 4x100 relay team of Ryan
Lopez, Steve Burden, Cory Crews and Nate Haslip (46.4).
Timothy
added a third in the 200m (24.1), Zeb Waters, a second in
the shot (38-1/2) and Martin a second in the high jump (5-8).
Other top three finishes for Blaine were Haslip (2nd 100m
hurdles, 17.5; 3rd 300m hurdles, 44.8), Crews (2nd 300m
hurdles, 43.4; 3rd 100m, 11.8), Dan Marchio (2nd 1600m,
5:02), Burden (2nd 200m, 23.9), Lopez (2nd javelin, 122-11),
Hardeep Heer (3rd shot, 36-5), Nick Leininger (3rd discus,
104-10) and Zac Waters (3rd javelin, 114-5).
The
boys 4x400 team of Martin, Haslip, Crews and Burden burnt
cinders for a second place finish of 3:39.4 in the boys
4x400 relay.
Hampered
by the absence of doyenne of distance Grace Coulter, out
sick, and weights specialist Becky Riddle, away on an academic
trip, the Lady Bs came third in the girls half
of the quad. SW totaled 141 points to win. Nooksack got
75, Blaine 34 and G-Falls 17.
Blaines
Maria Jackson won the 400m in 64.6 and was third in the
high jump at 4-6. Jackson anchored the 4x200m relay team
of Candice Chambers, Liz Marshall and Mollie Menard to grab
second at 1:58.2. Heidi Harmening was second at 7-0 and
Kimberly Harmening third at 6-0 in the pole vault for the
Lady Bs. Anna Sticklin added a third for Blaine with
a 35.6 distance in the javelin.
Blaine
opened the 2001 NCC track season against Mt. Baker at Deming
on March 22 with a 74.5-67.5 win for the boys and a 102-38
loss for the girls.
Haslip
led the Borderite boys, winning the 110 high hurdles (18.0),
300 hurdles (43.5) and the triple jump (35-5). Timothy won
the open 100 (11.8) and the 200 (24.2). Haslip and Timothy
were also on winning Borderite relay teams. McGee took the
boys shot (46-3). The Borderite boys team of Lopez, Burden,
Crews and Timothy won the 4x100 in 46.9 and Lopez, Burden,
Crews and Haslip took the 4x400 in 3:42.
Riddle won the girls discus (98-3) and shot (32-1) and Menard,
the girls 300 hurdles (57.4).
The
Borderites first home meet goes April 5 at 4 p.m. Meridian
provides the opposition..
