We have something to shout about at the Blaine Senior Center this month! With the help of a great board of directors and a forward-looking committee, we have adopted an official logo for our center.
A great deal of thought and research has resulted in a beautiful and very pertinent symbol of our membership and all we sponsor in the way of activities and community service.
Very soon, you will be seeing our members in bright new T-shirts with our logo proudly displayed on the front. Our new logo is a hummingbird–the little bird we all love to see buzzing around flowers and feeders has quite a connection to our senior center. Did you know that the hummingbird symbolizes joy, adaptation, boldness and the nectar of life? They are fast, busy and colorful. I think that describes our members perfectly.
We are so proud of our senior center that we want everyone who sees our logo to think of us, our fun activities such as Tai Chi, stretch classes, card groups, workouts, pancake breakfasts, lunches, celebrations and myriad other pastimes.
Also, don’t forget, we are partnering with Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 to offer yoga, Zumba and line dancing classes at the new pavilion adjacent to the senior center. Anyone can attend these classes at a very reasonable price. Our members were able to start ordering their own T-shirts at the Blaine Senior Center as of June 6. We have a choice of several colors, and sample shirts are available to try on for correct sizing.
Recently I was talking to one of our volunteers and it occurred to me that there may be people who would like to do volunteer work at the Blaine Senior Center who are hesitant for some reason: Fear of doing something wrong, fear of volunteering and not having anyone to take over when they want to stop, not being able to commit for a specific period of time, or on a particular date, to name just a few.
I would like to allay some of those fears. We’re always looking for people who want to help. Maybe it’s for a special event, such as the rummage sale, or the Spring Tea, or maybe it’s for something like rolling utensils in napkins for the meals we serve at the center, working in our flowerbeds or answering the phones.
Whether it’s for a committed time each week, just for a special event, or unscheduled, if you think you might be interested, please take the time to talk to one of our staff and perhaps leave your contact information. We want to work with you to find just the right fit for you. And remember, you might try something and find it’s just not the best for you.
Don’t hesitate to tell the staff and then try something else. Many hands make light work. Besides, we have a great volunteer appreciation night once a year and it’s really lots of fun, so you don’t want to miss that opportunity!
