After two years as the director of the Blaine Clothing Bank, Rosemary Schmitz has stepped down, and Jan Schlack has moved into the role of director.
Schlack moved to Blaine with her husband in October 2015 and almost immediately began volunteering with the clothing bank. Prior to moving to Blaine, she spent 25 years as the supervisor of the Medicaid, food stamp and cash assistance programs in Litchfield, Minnesota and also worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations that served the needs of low-income families. She was also active in the leadership of her church.
Schlack said she is looking forward to the challenges of directing the clothing bank and will be looking for ways to improve services to the community based on input from volunteers and clients.
The clothing bank, a service of the Blaine Community Assistance Program, provides free clothing for men, women and children. In 2015, people made 2,816 visits to the clothing bank, with more than 10,000 garments distributed.
The Blaine Clothing Bank is located at 500 C Street, next to the Blaine Food Bank, and is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Donations of clean, good quality clothing and linens may be dropped off during open hours or left in the drop box in the parking lot.
Currently 16 volunteers work with the clothing bank, but more are needed to cover shifts during open hours, as well as at other times to help with sorting clothing, cleaning and other behind-the-scenes chores. Schlack would like to see more youths get involved, and is considering adding some late afternoon and weekend shifts to help facilitate this.
