Blaine resident Kristin Cohn was crowned Mrs. Whatcom County last month and will compete for the Mrs. Washington title in Wenatchee on July 9.

The contest is a qualifier for the Mrs. America Pageant, which is similar to the popular Miss America contest, but for married women.

Cohn, a mother of four who has lived in Blaine for about three years, is competing to gain exposure for her chosen platform – adoption.

Cohn was adopted as a baby and has always been passionate about the topic. Locally, she speaks with couples who are preparing to adopt as well as with birth mothers. Her goal is to help all involved – the child, the adoptive parents and the birth mother – overcome the unique psychological issues involved with adoption, she said.

“I had the opportunity to meet my birth mother and I’m very glad that I ended up with my adoptive parents,” Cohn said. “I believe that every child needs a home and all it takes is a little bit of effort.”

Cohn and her husband are currently in the process of adopting a child.
