City to hold public hearing about changes to Semiahmoo projects

By Steve Guntli

The city of Blaine is asking for input on proposed changes to the Semiahmoo Shores project on Semiahmoo spit.

Semiahmoo Shores, formerly known as the Seagrass Cottages development, was approved in 2006. The development, originally a Trillium Corporation project, would add 68 duplexes and multiplexes to Semiahmoo spit. In 2015, city council approved an amendment to the Semiahmoo Master Plan to reduce that number to 62 duplexes.

The project’s current developer, DBW Whatcom LLC, asked the city to hold a public hearing to approve the new layouts and designs for the Semiahmoo Shores development.

Real estate design and management firm AVT Consulting has submitted an application to oversee the first wave of construction, including 16 duplexes. AVT Consulting’s application will be discussed at the same public hearing on January 28. One duplex, built by Roosendale-Honcoop Construction of Bellingham, is mostly finished and will serve as a model for development going forward.

If the plan is approved, construction on the first 16 duplexes will begin in April and is expected to finish in November.

The pubic hearing will be held on Thursday, January 28 at 7 p.m. in Blaine City Council chambers.
