Early berry season means more chances for U-Pick

By Katelyn Doggett

Summer weather provides many outdoor opportunities to go outside and spend time as a family, but why not branch out and try something you haven’t done before?

A trip to a U-pick berry farm combines spending an afternoon outside in the sun and eating locally grown fruit, so picking berries is the perfect summer activity for all ages, according to Boxx Berry Farm employee Lilia Varivoda. U-pick provides the experience of picking the berries yourself and tasting them in the fields, while still taking home as many
as you want.

This year, the berry season began early and many raspberry, blueberry and blackberry u-pick fields are already open to the public, Varivoda said. Raspberry and blackberry season typically begins at the end of June or early July but began in mid-June this year, while blueberries usually begin in mid-July. Strawberry season begins in late May, but has already ended in some locations.

U-pick is available at many berry farms across Whatcom County. Prices and berry variety vary by location. Grab sunscreen, water and a container and hop in the car to the nearest u-pick location.
